Interesting facts about Zitkala-sa 

 

  • Helen Keller wrote to Zitkala-sa praising her work and thanking her for her book Indian Legends.

 

  • Although Zitkala-Sa grew up speaking the Nakota (Dakota) dialect of the Sioux tribe, the name she chose was from the Lakota dialect. Zitkala-sa's gesture in self-naming showed her independence from her traditional Sioux heritage. 

 

  • She served as the secretary and journal editor of the Society of American Indians.

 

  • Afterward, she founded and officiated the National Council of American Indians.
