Written In The Sky

Zitkala-sa has many works of literature, ranging from short stories to articles. Though many have been published, there are some that have been hidden from the public eye. 

Old Indian Legends

Published in 1901

This book like many other books written by Zitkala-Sa is a collection of Native American legends and tales. In this book she tries to create a bridge between Native American culture and American culture and she advocates for Native American Rights. 

 

The Soft-Hearted Sioux

Published in 1901

In this book Zitkala -Sa writes about the cultural conflict that a young man faces when trying to decide which is most important his Native American culture or the White American culture. He has to choose between the Bible or between the knife of his Native American culture.   

 

American Indian Stories

Published in 1921

 

American Indian Stories is a book that is divided into two sections which are autobiographical (Impressions of an Indian Child) and folklore. In the autobiographical part a group of missionaries arrive in the reservation in which Zikala-Sa lives in and they ask her to go with them in order to be schooled.  In White’s Manual Labour Institute they try to teach Zitkala- Sa American customs and they try to “civilize” her because according to the missionaries Native Americans are not civilized. In this book we see the hardships that Zitkala-Sa faces while trying to learn this new culture she begins to experience a loss of her own culture. The second part of this book is a collection of Native American Legends. This book also includes essays that advocate Native American rights. 

Dreams and Thunder: Stories, Poems, and the Sun Dance Opera

Published in 2001

This book is composed of various stories and poems that Zitkala- Sa did not publish.

 

 

Iktomi and the Ducks and Other Sioux Stories

Published in 2004

This book is composed of fourteen Native American Stories which she learned during her childhood.  

 

 

Dance in a Buffalo Skull

Published in 2007

This book is a Folklore meaning it’s a book composed of myths and legends. This book is about a group of mice who have found a buffalo skull. And in this skull they hold parties and dance. There is a small fire which illuminates the skull while they party and keeps away the predators. One day as the mice party a hungry predator looks at the skull and tries to eat the mice and they run away.

 

Oklahoma's Poor Rich Indians: An Orgy of Graft and Exploitation of the Five Civilized Tribes, Legalized Robbery

Published in 1923

 

This is an article written by Zitkala-Sa in regards to the rights of Native Americans. This was published by the Indian Association Rights Association in 1923.  This article talks about how certain American corporations exploited Native Americans rights by taking their land and robbing their oil. 

 

 

The Flight of Red Bird

Published in 1997

This book like the American Indian Stories tells the story of Zitkala-Sa’s days at White’s Manual Labour Institute. But this book tells us her story through diary entries and letters.
